Persian Wool Carpets — 1,700+ Handmade Rugs Sourced Directly from Iran
Wool is the foundation of Persian carpet weaving. For over 2,500 years, Iranian weavers have used natural wool — sheared from mountain sheep raised at altitude in regions like Nahavand, Qashqai territory, and the Zagros highlands — to create rugs that outlast furniture, outlast renovations, and in many cases outlast generations.
At Ersaly, our wool carpet collection spans over 1,700 handmade pieces sourced directly from weaving workshops and tribal communities across Iran, shipped worldwide with full tracking from our UK and Iran offices.
What Makes Persian Wool Carpets Different?
The difference between a Persian handmade wool rug and a machine-made imitation comes down to three things. First, the wool itself — Iranian highland wool has a natural lanolin content that gives it resilience and a soft sheen that synthetic fibers cannot replicate. It absorbs dye deeply, ages gracefully, and becomes softer with use rather than worn. Second, the knot density — handmade Persian rugs are knotted individually, with some fine pieces reaching 400 knots per square inch, creating patterns of extraordinary precision and depth. Third, the origin — each rug in our collection carries the design vocabulary of a specific region or tribe, making it a cultural artifact as much as a floor covering.
Wool Carpet Collections at Ersaly
Kilim & Jajim Rugs — flat-woven wool rugs without pile, the oldest and most portable weaving tradition in Iran. Kilims from our collection include Qashqai tribal designs in bold geometric patterns and earthy natural dyes. Lightweight, reversible, and ideal for layering or wall display. From €297.
Gabbeh Rugs — the most expressive form of Persian tribal weaving, made by nomadic Qashqai and Luri women with thick, coarse wool pile and minimal, abstract designs. Gabbeh rugs are valued for their artistic freedom — no two are identical. The thick pile makes them exceptionally warm underfoot and highly durable in high-traffic areas.
Handmade Persian Carpets — our core collection includes formal knotted rugs from Iran’s major weaving cities and regions: Nahavand Iliati tribal rugs with their distinctive geometric medallions in warm brick reds and indigos, Kashan-style floral medallion carpets in deep crimson and navy, and Isfahan-influenced curvilinear designs. Sizes from 1.5 m² to 6 m² and beyond.
Patchwork Rugs — contemporary compositions assembled from fragments of antique and vintage Persian rugs, creating pieces that combine historical authenticity with a modern aesthetic. Each patchwork rug is unique by definition.
Vintage & Old Carpets — genuinely aged Persian rugs with the patina, fading, and character that only decades of use can produce. Sought after by interior designers and collectors for their irreplaceable depth of color.
Pictorial Tableau Rugs — figurative weavings depicting Persian landscapes, hunting scenes, garden paradise designs, and portraits. Used as wall art rather than floor coverings, these pieces represent the highest expression of the weaver’s narrative skill.
Wool Carpet Sizes — Finding the Right Fit
Persian wool rugs from Ersaly are available across the full size range. Small rugs from 1–2 m² work as bedside, entranceway, or accent pieces. Medium rugs from 2–4 m² define a seating area in living rooms and dining spaces. Large rugs from 4 m² and above anchor a full room. If you need a specific size not shown in our listings, contact us — our weaving partners in Iran can often fulfill custom size requests for larger orders.
Caring for Your Persian Wool Carpet
Natural wool rugs are among the easiest floor coverings to maintain when treated correctly. Rotate your rug every six to twelve months to ensure even wear. Vacuum in the direction of the pile — never against it — and avoid rotating brush attachments on the fringe. For spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth, working from the outside in. Deep cleaning should be done by a professional rug cleaner experienced with hand-knotted wool every three to five years. With proper care, a Persian wool carpet will outlast any synthetic alternative and develop richer color and patina over time.
