What Is a Taweez? — Understanding the Islamic Amulet Tradition

In Islamic tradition, a Taweez is a physical object containing sacred text — most commonly a Quranic verse or a du’a (supplication) — that is worn, carried, or placed in the home as a means of seeking divine protection, blessing, or healing. The word Taweez itself derives from Arabic root عوذ (awdha), meaning to seek refuge or protection. In different Muslim communities and languages it is known as Hirz (حرز) in Persian and Shia tradition, Taweez or Tawiz in Urdu, South Asian, and British Muslim usage, Ta’wiz or Ta’weedh in Arabic-speaking communities, and amulet or talisman in English descriptions. All these terms describe the same Islamic devotional object, though the specific texts, format, and wearing practice may differ between communities.

Taweez Holders & Lockets — traditional metal and leather cases designed to hold a written Taweez.

Our range includes cylindrical metal Taweez lockets on chains, leather Taweez pouches for wearing on the arm or neck, and ornate silver Taweez cases for Hirz papers. These holders allow the wearer to carry a written Taweez from a scholar while maintaining the piece as wearable jewelry.

Taweez Bracelets — Taweez in bracelet format, with the Quranic inscription integrated into a wrist-worn piece. Available in metal and leather-strap formats.

Taweez in Shia vs Sunni Tradition

The practice of wearing Taweez is found across both Shia and Sunni Islam, though the specific texts and formats differ. In Shia tradition, the most significant Hirz is the Hirz Imam Jawad — a specific protective prayer associated with the ninth Imam. Also widely used are Hirz al-Yamani (attributed to Imam Ali), and Taweez inscribed with Ayatul Kursi.

In South Asian Sunni tradition, Taweez typically contain Quranic verses specific to the wearer’s need — for protection, for health, for provision — written or inscribed on paper, cloth, or metal.
